Muscle and Fatigue Breakdown
Effective workouts should not cause muscle fatigue or break down muscle fiber. When the body is in a negative fuel condition it consumes muscle fiber for energy, a condition called cannibalization. This is the exact opposite of training objectives.
The Hormone Cortisol
The culprit behind muscle breakdown is the hormone cortisol. This is a catabolic hormone (often called the “stress hormone”) which is released during resistance training. Normally, we use carbohydrates, converted by digestion to glycogen, as a source of energy for exercise. During exercise the body senses the generated cortisol. If glycogen stores in the muscle are low, cortisol takes over and converts amino acids (used to build proteins, and muscle) into carbohydrates for energy. This limits muscle building severely and the body starts consuming muscles
